Hello Julie - I was interested to see your message. The name 'BEAGHAN' is a corruption of the Irish/Gaelic name for 'BEHAN', which is O'BEACHAIN, (with an accent over the 2nd. 'A', and name pronounced - 'O'BACK AWE IN'). I hope this all makes sense !!!. Also, I am not sure whether you are aware, but the name 'BEHAN' in Ireland, is quite scarse.
I myself am from the rugged West Coast of Ireland - County Clare, and now live and work in Kent, England
I am well aware also that during the numerous Famine periods in Ireland, genuine people were transported to Australia for 'borrowing' a grain of corn from rich landowners, to save themselves and family from starvation. This would coincide with the times you were referring to.

Kind Regards for now
Mike Behan.
