Hi,
My name is Vincent BEHAGUE, I'm living in the north of France and have some informations about the origin of the name :
BEHAGUE is a flemish name. This name is coming from an old dutch word "bagen". The meaning of bagen is someone who wants to like, it has been used for pleasant people.
Actually the verb "behagen" is still existing in dutch.
There is a lot of variants of this name :
- beague
- beaghe
- behaghe
- behaghel
I'm born in a town called Linselles (near Lille) where I've found all my ancestors from the beginning of the 18th century
There is a lot of people called Behague in the north of France around Lille, Armentières, Tourcoing, Quesnoy sur Deûle, Linselles but also around Saint Omer
For the history : in french guyana, there is a place called "Pointe Béhague". The name is coming from a not very commandable fellow called Béhague who was a governor of the area during the 18th century. He did a lot of damage and was banned by the king.
I can give you more if you want.
Bye.
