Nicholas Bieri Beery (b 1697 or 1704 and d 1762) who came to York Co, PA in 1724 was often listed as Peery in early York Co, PA land records. The York Co. Historical Museum has many papers concerning his land being claimed and taxed by both PA and MD colonies.
I have checked my records of this Nicholas and find no mention of a son named Joseph. I agree that the Germanic pronounciation of Bieri could easily be mistaken by English speaking people as Peery.
The second generation seems to have adopted the anglicized version of Beery.
Relatives of this Swiss Bieri family who came to this country in the mid 1800s kept the Swiss spelling of Bieri.
I have three of the Beery history books and would be glad to check on specifics if you wish.
