Fanny Good Beery

Fanny Good married Daniel Beery in 1837. From "Beery History" by Judith Beery Garber:

Fanny was the daughter of David and Barbara (Neiswander) Good and niece of Barbara Good, see 7-1, and Mary Good, see 7-4. The Good (German, Guth) and Beery families intermarried over several generations.

Fanny learned to read both English and German and though she never learned to write was very good at "figuring."

She made superior butter bought by patrons in Lancaster who paid more than the regular price. The constant flow of cold water through a wooden trough in the springhouse kept the butter fresh. Baking was done in an outdoor oven made of mortar with a floor of bricks on which a hot fire was built of very dry wood. After the oven was thoroughly heated the fire was raked out and the bread put in to bake. When the bread was done the oven was still hot enough for the pies which when done were put on the hanging shelf in the springhouse to keep cool. "Never such good pumpkin pies as Grandmother Beery made!"

In the springhouse loft were the loom and spinning wheels, and most of the family clothes were made from cloth of homegrown flax and wool woven by Fanny and her daughters after spinning and coloring the thread. Fanny was very industrious and was known as an outstanding housekeeper.

Daniel and Fanny Beery had thirteen children born over 21 years, from 1838 to 1858. Three died in childhood; all are further documented in the Garber history.
