Floyd,
Thanks so much for the warm welcome. I found Rebecca on the 1850 Polk Co. TN, census with John Bedwell on Monday, and I'm being welcomed here on Tuesday. I appreciate your offer of help. Is your posting of 11/17/01 still accurate in terms of Rebecca's sibs?

Do you have anything on John and Sarah Ogle Bedwell's parents or sibs?

Here's what I have on Rebecca's children:

Andrew J. Barksdale born about 1834 according to age in 1850 census. Haven't found anymore on him. Houston's Andy (see later) was apparently named for him.

Martha L. age 10 born about 1840 according to 1850 census age. Haven't found any more about her.

"Mary" is shown as 25 in the 1860 census and is probably the same as "Armenia" or "America" in the 1850 census at age 14. In 1870 there's "Minite" age 30, whom I believe to be the same, and "Mint Barkstall" age 35 is listed in the 1880 census as a pauper with a "white swelling". I've assumed she died after 1880. In 1880 she's shown with the John Copeland family who ran the poorhouse.

Wm H. (my ancestor) is 4 y/o in the 1850 census. In 1860 he's listed as "Houston", 12 years old, and in 1870 he's 19 y/o "Huston". By 1880 he's listed as "C.H. Barkstall" age 26 and is married to A.E?. or C. and has children Martha, age 2, and John born October 1879.

Rebecca is shown as 40 years old in 1850, 50 y/o in both 1860 and 1870, and presumably died after 1870.

I have C.H./Houston's birthdate as 5/9/1849 according to his gravestone in Tyner Cemetery, Hamilton Co., TN, and date of death was 7/10/1910. Gravestone there indicates name as "Hugston" and his birthdate is obviously incorrect in light of his age on the 1850 census. (Incidentally, at his funeral in 1910, one of my great-uncles, Walter Thomas White, was struck and killed by lightening in the Tyner cemetery.)

He married Ara/Are Woody about 1877 and children were:

-Martha Barksdale b 1878 m ? Bottoms
-J. Andrew "Andy" b 1879 m ? d 1957
-Mary Barksdale b 1881 d 1961 (m Beldon Little)
-Powell Barksdale b 9/19/1883 d 2/9/1961, buried Tyner Cemetery, Hamilton Co., TN, m Lillie Stuart
-Daniel Calvin Barksdale b 1888 d 1975
-Fronna Emma Barksdale (my grandmother) b 4/16/1893 d 8/22/1975 buried Tyner Cemetery, Hamilton Co., TN m Silas Origin White about 1910. (Children: Wallace F. White born 1911 and James T. White born 1921.)
-Etta Lee Barksdale b 1/19/1895 d 11/29/1985 buried Tyner Cemetery, Hamilton Co., TN m. Arthur Bottoms
-Charlie Taylor Barksdale b 1898 died 1967 married Lillian?

The inconsistent ages on Rebecca and her children are a concern to me and I'm still trying to sort them out. Barksdale is also spelled in various ways (Bardsdale, Barksdell, Barkstall) and may be an indication that Rebecca was illiterate, so perhaps the inconsistency in ages is explained. The family is consistently in Polk Co., TN from 1850 through 1880.

I will update you if I come across Rebecca's Barksdale husband. I'm planning to look at the 1840 Barksdales in Bradley, Polk and McMinn and see if I can trace them through to 1850, matching up families.

Please let me know something doesn't check out, or if you have questions.

Thanks again for the Bedwell info.
