Bedwell Family Genealogy Forum

In 1860 in Sevier Co, AR in Blue Bayou Township the federal census lists "Netter" Bedwell, female, 36, born, TN, children, John 14, bn AR, Francis (listed male but was female and my g-grandmother), 10, b AR, Jesse, 8, b. AR, Zackariah, 6, bn AR, and Martha, 2, b. AR. In 1880 Francis (Sarah Francis) was already married to Burton Yeargan and living in Mena, Polk Co., AR. My grandfather was her eldest son. John was married and living in Howard County, ED 114, sheet 4, line 25, and Jesse was living in Howard in Madison Township, ED 114, sh 11, line 31. I don't have any more information on John and Jesse than that. However, I do know that John married in Sevier Co in about 1870. His marriage is recorded on the same page as that of Sarah Francis Bedwell and Burton Yeargan. A Bernetta Bedwell married, I think in 1866, in Sevier to Squire Simpson. However, I don't find her with him in the 1870--don't know what happened. I assume she was "Netter". Several things lead me to believe that the 1860 Francis Bedwell was female--the family lived next to William W. Yeargan, my gg-uncle, the age was correct and, while my grandfather was named William Melvin, his younger brother was Burton Zachariah--there is no other Zachariah in the Yeargan family and since most of the girls carried family names, I see no reason that the sons wouldn't have. Perhaps that was the name of Netter Bedwell's husband as well as her youngest son. I don't have definitive proof of error in the census but I do believe I am right. There was no other Bedwell family in the area. I haven't been successful in finding other references to this family. Wish I could help more but . . .maybe we can help each other.
