There are many black Beckwith's in the US due to the fact that when the Beckwith's of VA freed their slaves, the slaves took the name of their owners.The Beckwith's of VA left Richmond Co., VA after Marmaduke d abt 1780 and his son Jonathan d 1796, the heirs sold the land they received and moved west.
Marmaduke became a baronet in 1743 upon the death of his older brother Roger.Jonathan, son of Marmaduke became a baronet upon the death of his father in 1780.He was a Rev. War Patriot and gave up his baronetcy when England and the Colonies went to war.He was a planter and owned tobacco warehouses along the Rappahannock River in Richmond Co. VA
He married Rebecca Barnes 27 May 1753, dau of Richard Barnes and Penelope Manley.They had seven children: (1)Jennings 1764-1835, married Catherine Miskell and was the father of James Pierson Beckworth, Mountain Man, known as a guide to pioneers going to California, a Crow chief who lived with and married an Indian Squaw, discovered Beckwith Pass, was a contemporary of Thomas D. Bonner and Jim Bridger. (2) Jonathan, a planter in Richmond Co., d before Sep 1824 when his will was proved, no issue. (3) Penelope mar Alexander Walker 17 Apr 1798, (4) Elizabeth
(5) Richard Marmaduke b 1774 d 1820 Stafford Co., VA mar Elizabeth Scott Buchanan 13 Feb 1798. (6) Barnes Beckwith b 1783 d 2 Mar 1855 at Jefferson Co., W.VA, mar 23 Jan 1805 to Elizabeth Peyton Martin. They were in Wood Co. WV during the 1820-1850 Censuses. (7) Rebecca mar Marmaduke Brockenbrough Beckwith 15 May 1795 and d at Jefferson Co., WV.
