I have a Jonathan E. Beckworth, born in Virginia about 1780. He moved to Louisiana with a woman who is listed as free black. He was white. Her name was Sally and they had six children together. All the children are listed in census as free black. Sally is from South Carolina and born about 1790. Any relation to Jonathan Beckwith? I was told the name was changed to Beckwith and may have had something to do with a murder in another state. Any information would be helpful.
