That last post is almost right.

Captain Samuel H. Beckwith, "Grant's Shadow" was from Hamilton,NY. He was Grant's field cipher-operator during the Revolutionary War, and also Grant's personal cipher-operator during his four presidental campaigns. Beckwith was also used by President Lincoln for transmitting cipher-coded telegrams from March 25 to April 8, 1865.

His tombstone stands in the middle of the Madison Street Cemetary in Hamilton,NY. He is buried near his mother: Elizabeth, his father: Samuel and his brother Cpt.David Beckwith.

"Capt. Samuel H. Beckwith
11th Reg't.
1840-1916
Grant's Shadow
Loyal
Patriotic
Efficient
Military Telegrapher and cipher operator to Gen. Grant 1862-1866.
He was the only man at headquarters who was intrusted with the key to the cipher
in which dispatching to and from the commanding general were received and sent.
He carried with fidelity the secrets of the nation."
