Beckwith Family Genealogy Forum

There are many stories/family traditions for many surnames as to origin of the surnames. The Beckwith surname has gone by many variations- Beckwith, Beckworth, Beckett, Beckuth, Bequeath, etc. Many of the early census indexes do not list Beckwiths simply because the census taker heard something other than Beckwith. Imagine Beckwith pronounced by a southerner. It becomes Beckwuth, which to most people sounds like Beckworth, with a "soft" r. I have a copy of the DeBretts research and some other correspondence. If I remember right (I will check it after track season ends May 15th), Henry was "dispossessed" for his religious beliefs. And there was some reference to his being in NC. Anyway, I will check my records. Many of the "Northern" Beckwiths used the spelling Beckworth also. I'm afraid that many families tried to "divorce" themselves from certain family "memories" and declare that "such and such is not true about our family". That, I think, is the case with the Beckworth vs. Beckwith controversy. By the way, the CT Beckwiths have no claim to royal ancestry- that put forth by Paul Beckwith in 1891 has long been proven false. Sir Marmaduke of VA has no royal Beckwith ancestry- he was peeerage (or whatever it is called) but not royalty. I haven't had time to do more research on the southern Beckwith lines. I would like to tie up some census "loose ends" and straighten out the SC and GA and FL Beckwiths. Not enough time in the week!Mahlon Erickson
