A hearth is simply a fireplace. So the hearth tax list can give an indication as to the size of a house and the wealth of the owner.

Birth dates are the best clue to the origin of a UK birth post 1837 - they are listed in the Public Record Office (PRO) register of Births.
"Adoptions" can be a problem. One of my deceased relatives delivered someones child and registered it as her own!! So officially it was not even adopted.
