Matthew 1 Beckwith, whose origins in England are unknown despite some unproven yet published assignments, appeared in Hartford CT ca. 1639-51, and in Lyme, CT from 1653 until he died from falling off a cliff at night in the spring of 1682. His widow Mary (whose maiden name is unknown despite some assignments) remarried Samuel Buckland and died by 1693.
Matthew 1 had 3 daughters and 4 sons, of whom the eldest son was Matthew Jr.
Matthew 2 Beckwith Jr. was born in CT ca. 1644/5 and died 4June1727 in Lyme. He had a will dated 1715. By Elizabeth (maiden name unknown), the first of his 3 wives, who died ca. 1684/89, he had 5 daus. and 4 sons of whom the youngest son was Jonah.
Jonah 3 Beckwith was born 27Dec1673 New London, CT and died 22Dec1721 Lyme, CT. He was a deacon in the Congregational Church in Lyme. He married there 26Apr1696 Rebecca DeWolf, daughter of Edward and Rebecca DeWolf. She was born ca. 1674/6 in CT and died 11July1743 in East Hartford, CT. Her brother Charles DeWolf married Jonah's sister Prudence Beckwith. Jonah and Rebecca had 2 daughters and 8 sons of whom the sixth son was Phillips.
Phillips 4 Beckwith was born ca. 1708/11 in Old Lyme and died in colonial service 10June1758. He left a will dated 28May1758. At the First Congregational Church of Lyme on 17Feb1732 he married Abigail Harvey who was chr. 13/6 June 1712 in North Lyme, and who survived her husband. Abigail Harvey Beckwith was the daughter of Thomas Harvey (1678-1725) and Abigail Smith Harvey Stocker (1682-1762). Phillips and Abigail Beckwith had 3 daus. and 5 sons of whom the fourth son was George.
George 5 Beckwith was born ca. 1742/3 and was christened along with his older siblings on 28Feb1743 at Old Lyme. He married about 1765 a woman named Dorothy (b. ca. 1743/50 and who survived him). Around that time they moved to that part of Farmington, CT which later was named Burlington. Here they lived until George's death in 1816. George and Dorothy Beckwith had 5 daus. and 7 sons of whom the second son was Jonah b. ca. 1767. George was associated with the Episcopal church in the area which was known to have harbored Tories. George's loyalty was questioned during the Revolution and he was arrested and brought before a committee but soon released. After the war, on 13June1785 he formally joined the Episcopal Church of East Plymouth (then New Cambridge) and his eldest son Benjamin joined shortly thereafter.
I am led to believe that there are inventory, deed dates, and a death date for George but I still have not found that information which would confirm his heirs.
