Beckley married Maria Prince on October 16, 1790. They had one son, Alfred, who attended West Point and had a military career. He resigned from the Army in approx. 1837 when his father's claim to an immense portion of what is now West Virginia was finally recognized. Beckley gave land to what is now Beckley, West Virginia, if the citizens would name the town after his father. Alfred had nine children who migrated West, taking their grandmother with them. Maria died in a plague in Lexington, Kentucky and is buried under the First Baptist Church. Beckley is the subject of a book (out of print) by Edmund and Dorothy Smith Berkeley as well as an article in the Spring, 1975, Virginia Cavalcade at page 178.
