Notes for JOHAN MATHIAS BECKER:
(Written by John Becker, son of John Mathias Becker, June 15th, 1860, age 70 years) In about 1771, my grandfather Arnold Becker took a notion to see the western country called "the backwoods," west of the Susquehanna River. Having made things ready for the journey, Arnold, his 7-year old son John, and several others of his friends filled their knapsacks with provisions, bid adieu to their families and friends, under the impression that they might never return again from the western wilderness, and set off, crossed the Susquehanna River which was called Rogues Creek. After their arrival on the west side of the Susquehanna, they explored the land from Wright's Ferry at Wrightsville down to Canjohah, now Windsor Township and being satisfied with the country returned to Lancaster, got their things ready and moved to the backwoods about one mile west of the Susquehanna River, in the northern part of Windsor Township in York County. When my father was nine years old his father died in York County.
At thirteen years of age he went to Paul Dritt who was then married to one of his sisters to learn the blacksmith trade, stayed two years then went to Lancaster to Jacob Heiffer three years more, was then free at eighteen and joined the American army under General Wayne, then in Lancaster in 1782 and was a soldier until the end of the war. And after peace was restored, he returned to York County, followed his trade. His other sister was then married to Aaron Ralphsnyder and his sisters with their husbands moved to western Virginia near Morgantown .
In the year 1788 my father married Esther Holder, a daughter of Michael Henry Holder, and they lived during his lifetime in Canjohah, commonly called Canadochly in Windsor Township and died at the age of sixty nine years, buried at the Canadochly Church. Was a pious Christian of the Lutheran Church and charitable to all benevolent institutions. He was a friend of Thomas Jefferson, forth president of the United States of America. He was among the first to establish a democratic republican government to rule this free and independent nation.

John Becker was a writer, surveyor, and inventor. The books that John Becker wrote are 8" x 6", well bound with card-board covers of the old time mottled and waving design, one dated 1843 and the other 1859.
These books were last known to be in the possession of John Becker's granddaughters Misses Ida and Grace Becker.
The first book has pen-cuts of the machinery which John Becker invented. The title page with scroll work and heavy shading is as follows: "John Becker, his book at Spring Mills, York Township, in the County of York and State of Pennsylvania, February the 10th A.D. 1843, containing memorandums of Machineries and Drawings." All is in his own handwriting, as well as the pen sketches of the parts. There are also descriptions of machines made by other men . His store was located at 27 S George St., York, PA; the machines were manufactured at Spring Mills, York Township, not far from Jacobus. The mill and factory were located to the left of the Codorus Bridge as you go to Jacobus, on the York Water Company's lands. He sold the rights to other merchants as is seen on page 24, an entry for Springfield Township, dated June 12, 1843, George Hartman paid $4.00 and November 6, John Beck paid $2.50 for the rights in Shrewsbury Township.
