Herbert BECKER is my gr-gr grandfather. He was suppposedly born in New York (February 12, 1854). His father was Lou (Lewis) BECKER mother Nancy FETTERLY (b. May 7, 1816 in Williamsburg), they were married June 28, 1836 in Williamsburg, Dundas County, Ontario, Canada.
Herbert BECKER married Alice HARRIS in Mason City, Iowa in December, 1877. However, when they married he was using the surname SCHERMERHORN. When their first two children were born in Iowa, their names were listed as SHERMERHORN. Later, all the children were raised as BECKER and Herbert and Alice both died as BECKER in California. He died in December, 1937; she in December 1943. Any guesses as to why the name change?
HERBERT BECKER supposedly had a brother named Alexander.
Herbert and Alice's children were: Herbert, Jr., Maggie, Mary, Archie, Jesse, Roy, Fred, Elsie, Edwin, Alice and King. Most of whom died in California.
Any help on the BECKER lineage would be appreciated. Also, any information on the SCHERMERHORN name would be nice too.
