I live in Columbus, OH- My info indicates that Peter Bechtel Sr. and his brother John left a brother Samuel and their mother(names of father and mother unknown) in Lancaster, Co. and came to Huntingdon Co. in Woodcock Valley in 1802, settled near Grafton which is now called Hesston.Peter built home on one side of Ashbaugh Run, John on the other. Bechtels came from Germany, a tombstone in Bally PA is dated 1728.
Lancaster Co. was later divided into Lancaster, Berks and Bucks Co.s. There is a town called Bechtelville? Reunions were held in Bally. Are these still going on?It is believed that Bechtels came from Bechtelhiem, Germany.
THeodore Snowberger built the log house on Bechtel land in 1812, was remodeled in 1920- may be still there.
Mr Snowberger was born 4/30/1764, buried in cemetery behind barn 7/26/1859. He married Elizabeth Eshelman; she died in 1825.A daughter, Elizabeth, married Peter Bechtel Jr.
The earliest church services were held in a large room in the Bechtel home. They were called German Baptist Brethren, also known as Dunkards.
Peter Jr. was the only child of Peter Sr. and Susan (Aumam) Bechtel. Peter Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth had 10 children, the first of which was Andrew, my Great grandfather (Dec 20,1829-Feb.3, 1907). I have all the other names and dates.Andrew married Elizabeth Brumbaugh (Jan, 19, 1828-Jul.4, 1861) and Elizabeth Frederick (Sept.2,1829-Dec,23,1909) having 4 children with each. This is the lineage of many of the Bechtels in Central Ohio Knox & Richland Co.s. I was born near Ankneytown in Knox Co. My Grandfather Jackson Bechtel was born in 1856-1934.My father was Elmer Bechtel (Jul 30,1896-Sept.26, 1969)
I have more info for any one interested.
