A History of St. Charles Church
Sixty Maryland families formed a league in 1785 for their mutual protection from the indians, with a common interest in the Church, and began a systematic emmigration to Kentucky. The congregation of St. Charles Church was founded as early as 1786 by Catholic settlers from St. Charles and St. Mary's counties, Maryland. They were among the first white people to move to Kentucky.According to B. J. Webbs "Catholocity in Kentucky", the first to settle on Hardin's Creek were Edward Beaven and his brother, Colonel Charles Beaven.
