Hi Jerry,
It is summer here, and I am not so active on any forum or lists.
I have a little problem with your last paragraph in your answer to Andrew B.

The main reason for the north south emigration, was surely economic as well as the immigration from France to Canada two centuries earlier. The families were too large to support all the siblings and some had to migrate as farmers to the west ( western Canada, american midwest) and as mill laborers to the New England states. Factories there were attracting labor, while industrialization in Canada was slow in its development and mostly in the hands of the english establishment.
