Ann:
I'm back at work on the Beauchamps again (after a long break).Inspired by your information from the Mercers Company, I sent them an email, got back the same information. But I also asked if they could tell me how many people named Edmund (Edmond, Edward, etc.) Beauchamp were members of the Mercers Company in the 17th century, because if there was only one, he's got to be the one who came to Maryland.
They sent me all their Beauchamps from the 17th century, including one who was apprenticed in 1718 -- precisely four names -- Daniel and William, who don't appear to be related and were later anyway, Edmund, son of John, as above, and Edward, son of Edward, yeoman of Cosgrove, Northamptonshire, apprenticed 1640, made a member 1648.
So, there were two Edm/Edw Beauchamps who were mercers, but this is actually good news.I had found two records revealing that Edward Beauchamp, mercer of London, was still of London in 1678 and 1681, and I thought, oh dear, this might be John's son.But Edward, in these later records, was dealing with land in Northamptonshire, while there's no evidence that John ever owned land there.I think Edward the mercer was the son of Edward who was John Beauchamp's elder brother, both sons of Thomas and Dorothy (Clarke). That Edward's son Edward was probably just the right age to be apprenticed in 1640.
Since there are only two Edm/Edw Beauchamps in the Mercers Company records for this time period, and one of them was still in England in 1678 and 1681, I think this pretty much locks it in that Edmund Beauchamp of Maryland, who was still calling himself Mercer of London in his will, years after he left England behind (clearly a member of the company), was John's son.
I've also recently stumbled into information about John Beauchamp's daughter Mary, who married Walter Wolseley -- her sister-in-law was the aunt of Gov. Charles Calvert, who recommended Edmund Beauchamp as clerk of the Eastern Shore, which tends to explain that.
I'm working on a report on all of this to post here. Will include more details than what I've written here.I'll be glad to let you know when I post it if you're interested.
I also haven't forgotten about my promise to post information on the Doggetts, including their wills. Will do that next.
But with all of these connections -- mercers, Doggetts and Wolseleys -- I'm now convinced that our Edmund was John's son.
