Dear Beauchamp Researchers:

Further research in the U. S. Federal Censuses has revealed the following:

The birthdate of Juliette E. "Julia" Adams, given previously as 1869/1871 ( based on information in certain federal censuses ), is not certain. Various other federal censuses give conflicting information on this point. Most importantly, we find Juliette E. Adams in the 1870 Federal Census at Biddeford, York County, Maine, in the household of her father "Chuck" Adams ( Charles H. Adams, born on May 12, 1827 at Meredith, Belknap County, New Hampshire - listed as a junk dealer in the 1870 Federal Census ). There it lists her with her other siblings, of which she was the oldest, and it states she was 9 years old in 1870, which would make her birthdate about 1860/1861. This is probably the MOST ACCURATE information about her true birthdate available in any of the federal censuses. If this information is true, and if it is also true that she was the wife of Allan A. Beauchamp ( who was born on April 17, 1874 ), then it appears that IN REALITY she was about 13 or 14 years older than her husband. Comparing the info about her in the 1870 Census with that in various later censuses, it appears that SHE LIED ABOUT HER AGE to her husband Allan, wanting him to believe that she was only about 4-5 years older than him rather than 13-14 years older. If she did lie to Allan about her age in this manner, it would satisfactorily explain the age discrepancies about her found throughout the censuses in which she appears. Simply speaking, it appears that Juliette wanted her husband to think she was about 10 years younger than she really was.

Research in the Federal Censuses has revealed that the maiden name of Adelaide ( or Adalaide ) N. Adams ( the wife of Charles H. Adams, and mother of Juliette E. "Julia" Adams ) was very likely Adelaide N. Youlon. In the 1850 Federal Census we find Adelaide N. Youlon ( born about 1827, which matches the info on Adelaide N. Adams in other censuses ) residing at Biddeford, York County, Maine. Since we find "Chuck" Adams and his wife Adelaide N. Adams also residing at Biddeford, York County, Maine in the 1870 Federal Census, it's highly likely that Adelaide N. Youlon was Adelaide N. Adams' maiden name. Adelaide N. Youlon and Charles H. Adams were probably married in 1859 or 1860, since it appears from the 1870 Federal Census that Juliette E. Adams was their first child, and Juliette was born in 1860 or 1861 ( according to the 1870 Federal Census ).

We have, so far, not been able to conclusively identify Adelaide N. Youlon's parents, but we believe them to have been William Youlon ( born about 1810 in Massachusetts ) and his wife Hester, who appear in the 1870 Federal Census. Adelaide N. Adams claimed in various censuses that she was born in Massachusetts, which is where William Youlon was born. It's also possible ( only suggested, not proven at this point ) that Clara A. Youlon ( born about 1835 in New Hampshire ), Silas E. Youlon ( born about 1838 in Vermont ), and Wager Youlon ( found in census microfilm records in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont ) were siblings of Adelaide N. Youlon.

It's possible that the surname Youlon is a variant of the surnames Houlin, Houlyn, Hulen, Hulin, Huling, Hulon, and Hulyn, or vice versa.

Sincerely, Philip K. Kromer
