Dear Beauchamp Researchers: The "World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918" database reveals the following information about Allan A. Beauchamp: (1) He was born on April 17, 1874. (2) At the time of his draft registration ( Sept. 12, 1918, at Arlington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts ) he was residing at 48 Cutting Street, Winchester, Massachusetts. (3) His place of business was located at 603 Boylston Street ( on Copley Square ) in Boston, Massachusetts. The distance between his place of residence ( 48 Cutting Street, Winchester, MA ) and his place of business ( 603 Boylston Street, Boston, MA ) is about 8.5 miles. (4) He listed his occupation as: Book Publisher and Book Seller ( self-employed ). (5) He listed his closest relative as: Julia E. Beauchamp. This person was presumably his wife. Research in the 1880 Federal Census has revealed that there was an "Allen" Beauchamp born about 1874 to John Sanders Beauchamp ( born on May 26, 1846 ) and Hattie M. ( McPheeters ) Beauchamp ( born about 1848/1850 ), who were residing at Liberty, Clay County, Missouri at the time of the census. John and Hattie were married in Missouri on March 16, 1872. This John and Hattie thus appear to be the parents of Allan A. Beauchamp, but this conclusion is only conjecture at this point. Further research has revealed a marriage ( in Boston, Suffolk County, MA ) "about 1897" between an "Allen" Beauchamp and an "Adams" ( born about 1876 in Boston, Suffolk County, MA ). In the 1880 Federal Census a "Julia Adams" ( born about 1875 ) has been identified as a daughter of Malcolm Adams and Bridget A. Adams, who were residing at Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts at the time of the census. This "Julia Adams" could thus very well be the same person as the "Julia E. Beauchamp" who ( also presumably ) was Allan A. Beauchamp's wife. Returning to the 1880 Federal Census, this same "Julia Adams" appears to have a somewhat puzzling "double or simultaneoes listing" with her older sister Eliza J. "Liza" Adams ( born about 1873 ): We find these 2 sisters residing not only in the household of their parents Malcolm and Hattie Adams, but simultaneously in the household of Martha Dexter ( in Boston, Suffolk County, MA ), which "household" appears to have been an orphanage or possibly some type of school. It's possible that these sisters were sent to this institution ( whatever it was ) to be put up for adoption. A search in the records has also revealed that a "Julia E. Adams" married Albert E. Sawyer on May 25, 1893 at Fitchburg, Worcester County, Massachusetts. If this is the same Julia Adams, it means her first marriage was at the age of about 17 ( to Albert E. Sawyer ), and that her second marriage was to Allan A. Beauchamp "about 1897." Again, these conclusions are purely conjecture on my part, but they do seem to fit the facts, and, at the very least, they provide a starting point for further research. Sincerely, Philip K.
