Thank you for your message… you would think that sorting out the Allen/Beatty information would be an easier task than it is… and anything that you can add is appreciated!

My working hypothesis is that there were at least 2 if not 3 John Allen’s in early Georgia (Note: I’m not counting the John Jr.s). From Georgia Tax Index, 1789-99
ALLEN, JOHN              BURKE              DISTRICT 1       1798       1A
ALLEN, JOHN              BURKE              DISTRICT 2       1798       1D
ALLEN, JOHN              JEFFERSON       CARSWELL       1799

===============
John Allen’s Number One lived in the Midville area, served in the Revolutionary War, and was the John Allen, charter member of the Bark Camp Baptist Church. The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 112 for Mrs. Rossie Smith Hand (111676) has him listed as:
Descendant of John Allen, as follows:
1. Thomas Young Smith (1838-1912) m. 1865 Julia Auriett (1840-1903).
2. Thomas Richard Smith (1814-78) m. 1834 Eliza Allen (1815-89).
3. John Allen, Jr. (1785-1861) m. 1812 Mary Young (1794-1850).
4. John Allen m. 1779 Elizabeth Inman (b. 1762).
John Allen (1760-1828) served as a private in the Revolution from Georgia. He was born in Burke County, Ga.; died in Georgia

Edwin Drew has put together a pretty reasonable list of this Allen’s descendants, which I can forward to you.

===================
The James Patrick Allen that you mention sounds like the James Patrick, DAR #369452 who married Frances SIMMONS (bc 1775 d 5 APR 1857). The website http://hometown.aol.com/ngmann/allen.htm has a fairly well developed list of documentation on James, his children, and includes the will of Frances Allen.

===================
John Allen Number 2 is the one that I believe married Jane Beatty and came on the same ship, Hopewell, with Joseph Beatty. Our family records include photographs of the gravestone of John Martin who married Elizabeth Allen, identifying their birth, death dates, and origin from Belfast Ireland.

Colonial records also identify John Allen as having come from Ireland in “Jan. 1771, lately from Ireland, via ship "Hopewell", with wife & 5 children “ Jane was alive at the time of John Allen’s will, so I suspect that in the years from 1771 to his death that he had several more children. Regretfully, his will does not name many of his children:

24 Dec 1803              Chatham County
... ALLEN, John
... Wife: Jane
... Grandaughter: Margaret Fleming, daughter of Robert Fleming
... Grandson: John Fleming
... 3 granchildren by James McConkey
...Probated: 25 Jan 1805 (1797 - 1806 Book A)

Robert Fleming is identified as having married an Allen, which matches your record.

It would be very surprising if John Allen all of sudden stopped having children on coming to America (Should we check the water???) The records that I have seen would be consistent with him having 4-5 daughters, as well as James Patrick Allen, John Allen Jr., and William. I've found records which circumstantially place all three of these in the vicinity and time period of this John Allen. My own guess that he might even have had additional children that no one has tied back to him (Robert & Daniel?).

It does appear to me that John Allen & Jane Beatty lived a full life, probably were blessed with many children, just that as yet no one has been able to nail them down.

Your thoughts on nailing down any of the Allen's are appreciated...

Jim
