Info from son Parker's military pension file:
Parker J. Beatty Sr. (my g g grandfather) and Lydia Howell were married July 1, 1862 at Sugar Creek by John Sargant Minister of the Gospel. Parker was drafted to the Pennsylvania Militia as a private in Captain Guthrie's Company A, commanded by Colonel Alexander in the War of 1861 and attached to W2 Drafted Militia Infantry on October 16, 1862 at Pittsburg. Parker died while serving his country April 25th ,1863 at Cliffburne Hospital in Washington D.C., after contracting the measles, he was laid to rest in the Beatty Cemetery, Jackson Township, Venango County, Pa. His only son Parker Jr. (my great grandfather) was born June 1, 1863 without having known his father.
Parker Jr. married Mattie J. Davidson Beatty and had a son together Harry William Beatty b. 07/27/1886 (my grandfather

1920s Nathan Broder, Samuel Barber (New York: C. Schirmer, Inc., 1954), 9. S. Leroy Barber's wife (Marquerite MacLeod Beatty) was from a family that was interested in music, and they were an influence on his son, Samuel O. Barber. Her sister was Louise Homer, who became a famous singer.

She was born Louise Dilworth Beatty in Pittsburgh and studied music at Philadelphia and Boston, then married the composer Sidney Homer in 1895 and went to Paris, where she studied singing with Fidèle König and Paul Lhérie (who had been the first Don José in Bizet's Carmen). Louise made her operatic debut as Léonore in Donizetti's La Favorite at Vichy in 1898. She sang Amneris and Lola at Covent Garden and was Ortrud and Maddalena in Brussels. Her American debut was with the Metropolitan Opera in 1900 where her first role was Amneris. During a very successful and long lasting Met career, she appeared at first mainly in Italian and French operas, but soon adding Wagnerian roles to her repertory. She created the Witch in Humperdinck's Königskinder in 1910 and was a notable Orfeo in Toscanini's revival of Gluck's opera in 1909. After resigning from the Met in 1919, she sang with other major American companies (San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles). Her last appearance at the Met was as Azucena in 1929. She was mother of six children. One daugther became a singer, one son a pianist. The composer Samuel Barber was her nephew.

The wide range of her voice was remarkable, enabling her to encompass mezzo-soprano roles almost as easily as contralto roles. Her roles included roles such as Siebel, Ortrud, Laura, Maddalena, Brangäne, Azucena, Venus, Dalila, Fidès, Waltraute, Ulrica, Fricka, Erda, Dame Quickly, Marina, Suzuki, Lola, Orfeo, the Witch in Humperdinck's Königskinder and many leading roles in now forgotten operas. Nelly Melba called her the world's most beautiful voice! It is said that Louise was a very expressive artist and a phantastic actress.

Thomas A. Rogers, of South Salem, is a native of the neighboring county of Highland. His father, Thomas D. Rogers, born on Paint Creek in Highland county in 1819, was the son of Col. Thomas Rogers, who came west with his father to Kentucky while quite young and became one of the pioneers of that state when it was known as "the dark and bloody ground". He was associated with Daniel Boone and when that famous hunter visited Ohio, Col. Rogers and an elder brother accompanied him. The Rogers brothers settled on the North fork of Paint creek, near the present site of Slate Mills, where they built and operated a mill. Within a year, Colonel Rogers moved farther up the stream to a point one mile from Rattlesnake creek, where he settled on a tract of land on the west bank of Paint creek and made his home there from 1803 until 1873, when his death occurred at the advanced age of ninety-three. Colonel Rogers was a considerable man in his day, a leader in the old Whig party and prominent in connection with the anti-slavery movement. In 1804 he married Polly McCoy, member of the well known family of
that name in Ross county, and they became the parents of five children.
After the death of this first wife, he married a Miss Watt, of Highland
county, and by her had several children. After her death he married Mrs. Narcissa Kincaid, of Greenfield, widow of Major Kincaid. The youngest of the children by the first marriage was Thomas D. Rogers, father of the subject of this sketch. Thomas D. was a man of strong character and influence in his community, successful in farming and stock-raising, and throughout his life actively interested in the political, religious and educational affairs of his section. He was one of the early abolitionists and a charter member of the Repulican party, of which he was ever afterward a stanch adherent. In religion he was a strong believer of the Presbyterian faith, being a member of the old Rockspring church, one of the first organized in the county. He was a deacon and elder in the church at Greenfield, and always took much
interest in religious affairs. His death occurred in 1889. His wife was Jane E. Beatty, member of a strong and numerous Ohio family, her mother being a Ewing and connected with the family of that name at Lancaster. Thomas D. and Jane (Beatty) Rogers had nine children: Alexander B. was a member of the Eighty-first Ohio infantry, and died with fever at Corinth, Miss.; Dora F. married a Mr. Seal and afterward died; Rev. Alonzo A. was a Presbyterian minister and died in Caldwell, Kan.; Mary M. is deceased; Adolphus T. resides near Hillsboro, Ohio; Urina F. is the wife of William L. Pinkerton, of Highland, county; William G. graduated in medicine at the Cincinatti college, took a special course in London, practiced a while in Greenfield, Ohio, and is now located at Honolulu; Charles F. was graduated from the Cincinatti law school and is now practicing his profession at Leesburg. The seventh child in order of birth was Thomas A. Rogers, subject of this sketch. He was educated in the public schools of Highland county and at the South Salem Academy. After leaving the latter, he taught school for a short
time, but eventually became an agriculturalist, to which prusuit he had
devoted the principal part of his life. He has met with success in
operations and achieved a high reputation as a breeder of fine stock;
conducts his business by the latest improved methods, and is a close student of everything pertaining to the science of farming, especially the breeding and improving of lifestock. Naturally, therefore, he takes a deep interest in the farmer' institutes and is often on the program for an instructive talk or paper on some live farm topic. Mr. Rogers is not only interested in every movement to increse agricultural education, but is profoundly concerned in education of all kinds, the public schools and academies having no better friend or warmer supporter than he. He had contributed liberally toward the proposed rebuilding of the old Salem academy and is always ready to help in any movement for the betterment of the schoold in township or county. In December 1882, he was married to Albina A., daughter of Strawder
J. Parrett, and they have had four children, whose names are Anna Maud, John B., Thomas Harold, and Robert A. The family are members of the South Salem Presbyterian church, of which Mr. Rogers is an elder.

Alex Steel Beatty is a physician and surgeon whose work has been in Iowa for twenty five years and who has worthily won an exceptionally high rating in his profession. Dr. Beatty since 1912 has been a resident of Creston. He was born at Greenfield, Ohio, September 19, 1875, son of Calvin O. and Mary (Steel) Beatty, both natives of Ohio. His grandfather, Alex N. Beatty, was a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and went to Ohio in 1833. The maternal grandfather, James Steel, was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and was nine years of age when he went to Ohio. Eight of his brothers came over on the same ship. James Steel lived to be ninety-seven years of age. Calvin O. Beatty spent his active life as a farmer and died in 1914. His widow survives him and resides at Greenfield, Ohio. Both are active members of the Presbyterian Church. Calvin Beatty was an early advocate of prohibition and was a strong Union man, and before the war one of the stations of the "underground railway" was on his Ohio farm. Three of his brothers were Union soldiers. Calvin Beatty and wife had four children: Alex Steel; Walter O., manager of the Fayette County Cooperative Association at Washington Courthouse, Ohio; James E., a farmer at Greenfield; and William K., who is also a farmer at Greenfield.
Alex Steel Beatty completed his literary education in Miami University at Oxford, Ohio, in 1900. He then entered the Chicago Homeopathic Medical College, graduating in 1903, and for two years had the advantage of special internship training and experience in the Cook County Hospital. In 1905 he came to Iowa, and for seven years practiced at Council Bluffs before locating at Creston. Here his work has been in the general field of medicine, and his professional duties have at all times had the first claim upon his energies and talents. During the world war he was a member of the exemption board. He belongs to the Union County, Iowa State and American Medical Assoiations, the Southwest Iowa Medical Society. He is affiliated with the Masonic Fraternity, belongs to the local golf club, and is one of the trustees of the Presbyterian Church. His wife has membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Dr. Beatty married in 1901 Miss Aimee P. Brown, daughter of George Brown, a farmer. She was born at Lyndon, Ohio, and attended an academy at South Salem in that state. They have two sons, Howard G., now in his fourth year in the medical department of the University of Iowa, and George A., a student in the Creston High School.

I found this info in an article on line: Prior to 1735, Davis Thomas of Darby, granted a lot on which to build a school house. The building was erected, another school was kept in a one-story brick house which stood until 1843 on part of the site of Mr. Zion burial ground. On June 6, 1818, a meeting of citizens of Darby and adjoining townships was held, when it was resolved "that we will discourage the use of ardent spirits as an article of drink; we will not prcure, use or give it to others as such in the time of gathering our hay, and harvest, at the raising of buldings or on other public or social occasions."   In 1841 the directors erected a stone school house in the village of Darby, which was used until 1855, when it was abandoned on the competion of the "Yellow" school house. The borough of Darby was incorporated in 1853 and became an independent school district. The old school house built in 1841, was sold to the borough and later was used as a jail. After the creation of the borough, a two-story sto! ne building was erected, to which a two-story brick addition was built and rooms for six grades provided. In 1878 a one- story brick school house was built at Sharon Hill. After the population of Darby as a borough had reached the required number, 5000, application was made for the classification the creation of an independent school district of the third class, under which alssifiecation the borough schools now exist. The boverning body is a board of seven school directors, elected for a term of six years. The management of the schools is under a superintendent who is responsible to the board and appointed by them. Two buildings, known as the Walnut and Ridge Avenue buildings, are in use, the former being the home of the high school. Thirty-four regular teachers are employed, and three substitutes for a school year of ten months. In the high school, five teachers are employed, INCLUDING ELLEN S.
