The place name dates back at least to the early 17th century and Dal is just Dale - valley. the Beattie element could be quite unconnected. There is a castle a mile to the west called Buittle Castle. In its known history there doesn't seem to be any crucial Beattie surname element. However Dalbeattie is only 35 miles from Langholm in Eskdale, which is a key location for Beatties, so well within migratory reach. You could look to see how far back the Beatties you have found first appeared there and whether you just have the descendants of one or two migrant families that multiplied and stayed for a number of generations.
