A biography of John Beaton is included in "Progressive Men of the State of Montana". Parents: Daniel and Sarah (McDonald) Beaton, both born in Invernesssire, Scotland. Daniel Beaton came to Nova Scotia at age 18 and died there in 1893, age 79 years. Sarah died when John was just a few weeks old. On 26 June 1901, John married Laura Pelky, a native of New Brunswick.
