For what it's worth, here's what I have on the James/Experience issue. I don't have a copy of the "Otis Papers", but I've been told that there is reference to this marriage in there.

John Howland of the Mayflower--Volume 2
Experience Howland (1668- )
b. 28 Jul 1668; no further record. There is no proof that she married James Bearse of Barnstable, who moved to Halifax, MA. Experience was considered a man until 1930 when the Bearse Genealogy suggested that this Experience might have been a woman, who could then have married James Bearse. No proof has been found for such a marriage.
