You’re correct – your mtDNA will be identical to your mom’s and to everyone up your line back to the mother of Rebecca (Bearse) Reed. It should clearly show whether she was Native American or European.
Yesterday I had a Bearse project set up on FamilyTreeDNA.com (I investigated a lot of different companies last year for another project) so we can order tests at group rates and tabulate the results. Our webpage will actually be on worldfamilies.net, and orders for tests will go through World Families (to get the better (free) website.) I’m just waiting for their link to be set up.
Most mtDNA projects (since they can’t be surname projects) are set up by haplogroup, general geographical, or ethnic category. (I belong to the Amerind project, but until you’re tested, how will you know?) After your results come in, you can join more than one project to get access to other group results.
I think any mtDNA test done within the Austin Bearse line will be of interest to us all, so we could make your test a part of our project. You can certainly look for another group (I recommend joining SOME group project to get the lower test costs) but since Freelove Canfield is part of the Franklin Bearse conversation, other female descendents will more easily find your results on our page and benefit from your pioneering efforts to solve this mystery!

Everyone else, yDNA and mtDNA tests for our project can be purchased for now at https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=G45186&special=true but in a day or two it would be preferable to order through the project at http://www.worldfamilies.net/. I’ll notify the forum when that link is ready, then send out the word to other forums and user groups.
And anyone else considering testing - if you are hoping to help us answer our project questions, PLEASE provide us with your lineage! Just a string of names is fine.
