Hi, Margaret

What a great idea! However, my understanding now is that any conclusive DNA testing will only work with direct descendants of either Austin Bearse or Mary Hyanno. To be a direct descendant of Autin Bearse, for example, a male would have to have a Y-chromosome that goes straight back to Austin Bears through his father, his paternal grandfather, paternal great grandfather, etc. If the relation does not go straight back in a direct link through the male line, a link with Austin Bearse will not be conclusively shown, even if one exists, because Austin Bearse would not have had the same Y-chromosome. If a direct line does exist, then chances are high that Austin Bearse would have had the same Y-chromosomes shared by all of his direct descendants.

The same is true for showing direct ancestry to Mary Hyanno, which would come though the mtDNA of either females or males. To be a direct descendant, ancestry would have to pass from one's mother, maternal grandmother, maternal great grandmother, etc., all the way back to Mary Hyanno. If the relation does not go directly back through all the females in the family, a link with Mary Hyanno will not be conclusively shown, even if one exists.

My link is on my father's side of the family, where I got my Y-chromosome, but it came from his mother's line. That means I did not receive her X-chromosome, although I did receive some of her genetic material. So, I would not be a good candidate for this DNA study because I am not a direct descendant through my mother, maternal grandmother, maternal great grandmother, etc.

Although I would not be a good candidate, many other people may be, and I would strongly encourage them to join the study! Thank you for doing this!

Mike
