I'm sorry I neglected to reference Martin Hollick's message #259 in the Bearse Forum, which identifies Franklyn with one Frederick Bearce, son of Noble and Mary of Allegan, Michigan who is listed as white with white parents in the 1880 census. Mr. Hollick also adds some colorful details about Franklyn's efforts to capitalize on his claimed Native American heritage. If Frederick and Franklyn are identical, as seems likely, this census and the anecdotes Mr. Hollick cites further reinforce my conclusion. Franklyn may have adopted cultural trappings of a Native American, and certainly as an adult he self-identified as Native American, but in the sense that counts in law, i.e. degree of Native American blood, he was neither Chief nor Indian. The huge amounts of money he believed to be at stake were reason enough for him to try to correct this deficiency by fraud.
