Who am I?

Hi, my name is Stephen Burras and I would like to know if I happen to have any long lost relatives around.

Apparently, my Great Grandfathers name was Levi Bearse and he was an Orphan, who never knew who his Relatives were.

As I understand it, he was in the Union Army during the Civil War, under the name of Levi Bearse, but when he was discharged, the name on his discharge papers was Levi Burras. He then married Marilla Aldrich who, of course, became Marilla Burras.

What I heard from my Dad, was that when he signed his name "Bearse", it was hard to read his scribble, so on his discharge papers, it just said "Burras", and for reasons unknown, he just kept the name. I guess that since he didn't know his Relatives, he just didn't care what his last name was.

So, now when people see my last name, and they ask me what nationality I am, I just tell them the truth, that I don't have the slightest idea. Some folks tell me i'm a Mexican even though I have light skin and blue eyes. It seems that "Burras" means "Female Donkey" in Spanish.

When I asked my Dad, (Now Deceased) why he didn't just change his name back to Bearse, he just said it was to much trouble.

Personally, I really like the name Bearse and would like to change it back some day even though i'm 58 and never had any Children. I just feel it's the right thing to do and it would give me more of a sence of Identity.

So, is there anyone here who knows anything about Levi Bearse or his Relatives? I think it's important to know things like that.
