Dear Felix,
Though I agree with you that one may not be likely to find a Bearse/Bierce surname in Nova Scotia, one can certainly find numerous descendants of Augustine Bearse and Mary Hyanno on our shores. Starting with this couple, then their son, Joseph, to his son, Benjamin, to his son, Benjamin II, and then to his daughter, Sarah, who married Gideon Nickerson. Hence the loss of the Bearse surname in that line. So far I have been able to trace to six separate lines back to Sarah Bearse and Gideon Nickerson on my husband's father's side. According to the information I have, Sarah Bearse was born in 1745 in Chatham, MA and she died April 24, 1815 in Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada. Sarah's husband, Gideon Nickerson, was born March 14, 1745, in Chatham, MA. He and Sarah were married August 30, 1764 in Chatham, MA, and Gideon died October 11, 1811, in Barrington, Nova Scotia, Canada. Though the Bearse surname wasn't carried to Nova Scotia's shores perhaps, the blood still flows in many folks here, including that of my husband and two children; and I wouldn't be surprised to find a connection for myself through my Crowell family who were some of the very first settlers in the Barrington/Cape Sable Island area way back when.
