Yes,"Coppers" was a common, but not totally derogatory term for Indians at one time. It referred not to skin color but to the "Indian head" one cent coin, which was a large penny made of copper. It was replaced by the Lincoln head penny. Hope this helps. This subject got me interested enough to check out the Austin story for myself. I will post my research on a new message.
