This is a search for family members that lived and married around Bayou de Chien area of Fulton County, Kentucky in the 1850s thru the early 1900s. Three different families are involved: Taylor, Beard and Dowdy. Here’s what I know: Martin Beard married Lydia Cox in Maury County Tennessee in 1816. They are enumerated in the 1820 census and Martin is listed several times in the 1820s at estate auctions. They either were missed in the 1830 census or had already left the area. Their last known child was born in 1839. In 1841 Lydia appears with children on the tax list in Fulton County, KY living on Bayou de Chien where she remained until she died One of Martin and Lydia Cox Beard’s sons was Robert Beard. He married Mary Jane Taylor in 1852. A JG Taylor, whom I assume was her father, signed permission for her to marry. JG is in the 1870 census and was born ca 1811 in Tennessee. Mary Jane was also born in Tennessee. There are several Taylor families living in Fulton County and adjacent Obion County TN at this time including the family of Littleberry Taylor who lived on Bayou de Chein, All of these families are descendants of Bernard Taylor of Chesterfield, Virginia. Robert and Mary Jane Beard had several children, one of whom was Lydia Beard. Lydia Beard married Thomas Dowdy by 1880. They had at least one child, Lucy Ellen Dowdy, who was born in 1882. The only record we have been able to find of Lydia and Thomas was the 1880 census. Family oral history is that Thomas and Lydia died shortly after Lucy Ellen was born. In 1900, Lucy Ellen Dowdy was living with her uncle, Daniel Webster Beard son of Robert Beard and his wife Lulu Frances Dowdy Beard daughter of Joseph W and Sallie Nell Pace Dowdy. Also in the home is Mary Jane Taylor Beard. In 1905 Lucy Ellen married John Luther “Dyke” Martin and moved southeast Missouri and lived both in New Madrid and Mississippi Counties. In the 1930 census Joseph W. Dowdy is living with Lucy and Dyke and as enumerated as Dyke’s father-in-law which suggests that Lucy grew up in Joseph W’s home. The most significant Dowdy living in the Bayou de Chien area of Fulton County was Allen Dowdy b ca 1799 son of Benjamin and Rebecca Dowdy. Allen came from Williamson County, TN about the same time as Martin and Lydia Beard left Maury County. Any information will be appreciated. Notify Administrator about this message?
