Nancy-
Thanks for the reply. I know there a number of web postings that say that the John who married Sarah Holmes is the son of James Bearce and Experience Howland as well as an even larger number that say he is the son of Joseph Bearce and Martha Taylor. However, there also are some statements by highly rated Mayflower genealogists that there is no evidence to support the claims that Experience married James Bearce, or that James married or had children by any wife. For example, Elizabeth Pearson White, author of the 1993 John Howland of the Mayflower, Volume 2. So, with all due respect, I'm not convinced that you're right. The problem that I'm bothered about is that there are a lot of Bearces with similar names in different places in southeastern MA in the 1600s and 1700s, and I'm beginning to wonder if some of them have different ancestors than the Austin that was the father of Joseph and James. Has anyone ever considered that possibility?
Dave
