Let me call people's attention to a few useful references to Bearces in early Maine, especially the brothers Asa and Gideon and the next couple of generations. You can search the books for Bearce references.

"History of Paris, Maine, from Its Settlement to 1880" http://books.google.com/books?id=qVMeu3xrioEC&printsec=titlepage&source=gbs_summary_r&cad=0

"Annals of Oxford, Maine" http://www.archive.org/details/annalsofoxfordma00king

"GENEALOGICAL AND PERSONAL MEMOIRS Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts" http://books.google.com/books?id=qaK9Vz1UdDcC&printsec=copyright&source=gbs_summary_r&cad=0
