Dear Linda:
Since your response I have had an opportunity to go to the National Archives and picked up some dates that I did not have before. It looks that "my" Thomas Beamish died prior to 1896, in Nova Scotia. And was born in the early 1830's - thanks for answering but I don't think we have a match.
