BEAM to BAYNE: NJ & PA
How the BEAM name morphed into BAYNE (NJ/PA)
This is a good example of what causes brick walls:early deaths, remarriages, more daughters than sons, records, if they exist at all, spread over several counties and states, name spellings constantly changing, and more.
If anyone has anything on any of these people named here, please let me know.
Susan(nah) METZ, b. abt 1770-75 in Warren/Sussex Co., NJ, youngest daughter of Valentine and H/annah Metz.
When Valentine wrote his will in 1808, he left a bequest to Susan [BAMM] and her two daughters Rachel and Leah "now living with me."
This NJ Metz family had strong ties to their relatives in Plainfield Twp., Northampton Co., PA.Several baptisms in the Plainfield Reformed Church refer to Susan Bam/Behm and her husband Elias:
Valentine BEHM, son of Elias and Susanna, born Jan. 26, 1801, bapt. [no date]*; sponsors, Valentine Metz and Anna.
Thomas BEHM, son of Elias and Elizabeth [sic], born Oct. 4, 1801, bapt. [no date]*; sponsors, William Metz and Elizabeth Hahn.
In addition, there are these baptisms during those same years at that church:
Nathan Boem & Elizabeth, dau Rachel*, b. Feb. 7, 1795, bpt Aug 7, 1796.Sp:John Schiffer & wf.
William Bohen & Margaret, dau Sarah, b. Apr 17, 1796, bpt Sep 5, 1796. Sp:Michael Schmidt & Sarah.
Nathan Boem & Elizabeth, son Jacob, b. Mar 5, 1797, bpt Jun 11, 1797.Sp:Conrad Schiffer, Sophia Happel, single
Nathan Bam (Boehm) & Elizabeth,dau Sarah, b. Dec 8, 1798, bpt ?.Sp:George Happel & Eliz. Caster.
[The two Elias baptisms insert here. The one record where the parents are called Elias and "Elizabeth" probably confuses Susan with Nathan Boem's wife, Elizabeth.]
Nathan Behm & Elizabeth, daughter (unnamed*), b. Sep 7, 1802, bpt ?.Sp:Peter Kessler & Elizabeth. *This name was probably Elizabeth - more about her later.
John Behm & Rachel*, dau Elizabeth, b. Feb 8, 1809, bpt Jun 25, 1809.Sp:Jacob Miller & Sarah.
Of interest here, is that I find three of these men in the 1800 census and in the Northampton Co. Tax records for those same years, where the name has morphed to BANE, BAINS, BAYNE, BANES, etc.
In the Northampton County Tax Books for Plainfield Township:
1801
Elias Bane.16.8
Nathan Bane.16.8
John Bane.49.25
1802
Elias Bayne.13
John Bayne.28
Nathaniel Bayne.13
1803 - No listing for Elias or Nathan.John Bain/Bains/Bane was listed through 1809:
1804 - John Bains, Plainfield.12
1805 - John Bane, Plainfield1.23
1809 - John Bane, Plainfield
1800 census Northampton County, Plainfield
Bane, Elias PA NORTHAMPTON CO. Males:1-0-10; 1-26-45; Females: 1-0-10; 1-26-45
Bane, John PA NORTHAMPTON CO. Males: 2-18-26, 1-over 45; Females:1-26-45; 1-over 45
Bane, Nathan PA NORTHAMPTON CO. Males: 2-0-10; 1-26-45 Females: 1-0-10; 1 26-45
The three above are listed sequentially; James below is listed on a different page living in Mt. Bethel and may be related as a cousin or nephew:
Bane, James PA NORTHAMPTON CO. Males:1-18-26; Females: 1-26-45
And then this burial record probably relates to him:
First Reformed Church of Easton, PA
Anno 1802, Dec. 21.James Baynes, Mount Bethel27 y 4m
(Researchers looking for Beams/Beans/Baynes in Oxford, Warren Co., NJ, should also consider Mt. Bethel, PA, directly across the river; settlers in those days were bi-coastal.)
From the above, it would seem that these particular Beam/Banes had left the area after 1809 or died.It also appears that John is an older man, being taxed a greater amount, and is probably father to Nathan and Elias. One of the 18-26-year-old males from the 1800 census record could be a younger John, the father of the child baptized in 1809, above, and of the smaller taxation in 1804.
This tax record could refer back to the older John
1780 taxables:
Gentlemen's Lands, Plainfield: John G. Buhn740
Another record of this period is a marriage record at the Easton Reformed Church between Frederick Hess and Catherine Banes, January 07, 1808.
Records for Nathan and Elias vanish after 1802, except for a note when Valentine Behm [Valentine Boehn], 18, "son of Elias," was confirmed at Plainfield Church on November 21, 1818.This is the first record for the surname Boehm or its variants in the Plainfield records since 1809; moreover, the list of those being confirmed indicates when a parent is deceased and this was not done in the case of Elias. It could have been an oversight in the record.
A Northampton Co. Orphans' Court record was found:
25 August 1809:
Guardian for minor child Elizabeth Bane, an orphan under the age of 14.Father not named.
Petitioner:George Peter Kessler, Plainfield Township, Godfather and friend of the child.
Guardian:Peter Glassner.
As Peter Kessler/Glassner was the baptism sponsor for the unnamed daughter of Nathan and Elizabeth Behm in 1802, it's probable that Elizabeth Bane is that child.
Further, there was also this Orphans Court Record in Northampton (Carbon County, including Mauch Chunk, was set off from Northampton in 1843)
1830, book 11 p. 207:
Valentine Bayne, Mauch Chunk, John Bayne, Admin.
The Registrar further certified and presented to the court the account of John Bayne, Admin., of Valentine Bayne, late of Mauch Chunk in the County of Northampton, labourer, deceased, exhibiting a balance due to the accountant of 10.34, which account is held under advisement by the Court.
A John Bayne of Mauch Chunk, almost certainly the one who was the Administrator of Valentine Bayne's estate, died of consumption in 1842 leaving a wife and five daughters named Rebecca, Martha, Susan, Isabella and Sarah.A genealogical source says John " was a pioneer settler of Warren Co., NJ., before coming to Mauch Chunk."[before 1830]
So, this chain ends up back in Warren Co/Sussex Co., NJ.
Does anyone have any of these people?
