In "Flashbacks" by Patrick M. REYNOLDS in the comic pages of The Washington Post 12 Feb 2012, he salutes Yarrow MAMOUT a slave born about 1736 in Guinea who was brought to America as a teenager and was sold by a ship captain, Robert HOW, to Samuel BEALL. As an aging former slave, MAMOUT is cited as a shareholder in the Bank of Columbia established in Georgetown, DC in 1794. "Virtually forgotten today," MAMOUT was one of the "most popular citizens of Georgetown." The piece says that Samuel BEALL's great great grandfather was Ninian BEALL "an original landowner of Washington and, as a Scottish patriot, was brought to the Americas as a slave of the English." Samuel BEALL took MAMOUT to his estate in Montgomery County MD and when Samuel died in 1778, the slave became the poperty of Samuel's son, Brooke. Brooke BEALL, the comic strip says, made a promise to MAMOUT that if he would help make bricks for a house he planned to build, he would set him free. Before construction started, Brooke died. The strip says "Continued." Wait til next week!
