Hi Tony Now that Christmas is over I finally have time to answer the message you posted a couple of weeks ago. I did send a quick reply on the 15th but may have done something wrong as it didn’t show up as it should have. Anyway, hopefully this will go through properly. Firstly, a little background. My father (Alfred Gaynor (Arch)) died in 1987 but he always said there were two unrelated families of Beadles in Dunedin. However, as when my mother did some research 30 years ago he wasn’t able to tell her his grandparents names, that doesn’t mean much! And I guess as Beadle is a rather uncommon name we are probably all related somewhere along the way. The reasons I am pretty sure that the Alfred Beadle whose birth details you have is my grandfather are: 1. I was a year out in my estimation of 1874/75, it should have been 1875/76. Given that his birthday was 9 Feb and he died early March, he would have been 83 years old at the time he died. One reason I tended towards the earlier dates was Harriett’s age but I guess Alfred was a bit of a surprise. 2. His place of birth is shown as Great King St. There is a birth notice in The Otago Witness March 10 1860, saying “ At Great King St, Dunedin, on the first instance, the wife of Mr James Beadle of a son.” This ties in with the gravestone inscription below of Charles Beadle born 1st March 1860. 3. I don’t know if you have come across the gravestone in the Northern Cemetary in Dunedin for Harriett and James Beadle and a number of their children. The info on the grave is as follows: Thomas Beadle b. 6 May 1870 died 7 Nov 1884 James Beadle b.30 Nov 1828 died 31 Oct 1907 Harriett Beadle b. 23 July 1829 died 16 April 1908 Frederick Beadle b. 27 Nov 1871 died 31 July 1917 Charles Beadle b. 1 March 1860 died 18 Aug 1934 Charlotte Beadle b. 26 March 1865 died 12 Nov 1934 Also Minnie daughter of above b. 30 July 1861 died 27 July 1959. While I suspected James and Harriett were his parents, I have not yet obtained any BMD certificates largely due to the NZ$30 charge a pop and the fact that I am no longer living in NZ which makes things just that little bit more awkward. Also, my brother in law lives in Dunedin and is going to look into the records available at the Early Settlers Museum and elsewhere. I had found the record of James and Harriett’s marriage on the familysearch website. There are also records of a James Beadle, son of James and Frances, being baptised 28 Dec 1828 at St Matthew, Brixton, London; and a Harriett French, daughter of Frederick and Jane, being baptised 13 Sept 1829 at Aldringham Cum Thorpe, Suffolk. Both christening dates tie in with their birth dates but don’t necessarily agree with what is shown on Alfred’s birth details but tantalising none the less. I have a friend in London who will hopefully be able to look into the marriage in particular a little more closely. From a quick search on the familysearch website, there seem to be quite a few Beadles in Wimbledon where your line comes from. A much nicer part of London than Deptford or Brixton, even in those days! Are you related to Peter Beadle the landscape artists? I know whenever he was discussed in our family, Dad again said, he was not a relative. Mind you, I don’t actually know if he originally came from Otago. Interesting that you have a record of Alfred and Alice at 21 Driver St in 1911. I presumed they were married a year or so before my father was born but obviously not. The only other relevant pieces of family history are firstly that in the early 1970’s when I was a child we went to the Early Settlers Museum and I can remember being shown a baby’s nightgown that was on display. I can’t remember which Beadle baby it belonged to but Dad said it had been worn by one of his father’s siblings. Secondly I have a photo of the Union Football Club taken in the 1950’s. It shows Alfred and beside him is a very cheery faced elderly man who is shown on the back as being Uncle Bill Beadle, presumably Alfred’s brother William. Don’t know if this is of any relevance to you but it would be great to hear back from you with you thoughts on any of this info. Kind regards, Kathryn Notify Administrator about this message?
