Could that account for the gaps as regards the names of the wives for some of the males in my line (or anyone else's for that matter)? For instance, my ancestor, David Bazemore was married to "unknown" but his children are listed by name. I have heard that women of color were not always included by name on the census. Any ideas about that?

PS: Who are your Bazemore relatives? Talitha or Tabitha Bazemore is my ascendent and she lived in the early to mid 1800's and was married to Robert Toombs Massey. Their daughter, Missouri Elizabeth Massey was my great-grandmother. They lived in the Carolinas and Georgia.
