Kinloch, Essex Co., VA; Baylor family seat
I own a recently published book "Historic Sites in Virginia's Northern Neck & Essex County," edited by Thomas A. Wolf. There are several mentions of the Baylor family, including:
"Kinloch site - This manor house which burned in 1947, was the seat of the Baylor family, whose name is closely associated with many old sites in upper Essex County.Richard Baylor Sr., who is said to have owned the greatest number of slaves in Virginia on the eve of the Civil War, built this imposing Greek Revival house near Supply in the 1840s...After the 1947 fire, the Baylor family graves were moved to Vauter's Church."
There is a note that the site is not visible from the road, and that it is privately owned.
"Vauter's Episcopal Church - This church is now thought to have been erected about 1719......It was later saved from outright destruction, however, by parishioner Muscoe Garnett of nearby Elmwood, who claimed as his own the land on which the church stands."
The church is visible from the road and has a historical marker.
