(4) c.1720: Under age at his father's death. His welfare was entrusted to the
guardianship of Col. Augustine MOORE of "Chelsea," his uncle by marriage, and
his uncle Col. Robert BAYLOR, both merchants.
(4,6c) He was placed in school at Putney's Grammar School, England.
(4,6c) Was sent to Caius College, Cambridge, England.
(4) 1726: Returned to VA when he reached his majority.
(3,6c) 1726: Moved to Newmarket, King & Queen Co., VA, later Caroline Co. (3) He
occupied a grant of land made by Robert TRONSDALE in behalf of the King the
year before. The following year Caroline Co. was formed. New Market remained
in possession of the family. (4) In 1726 he was granted a large tract of land
on the upper reaches of the Mattapony River, which the next year fell in the
new county of Caroline. The Caroline Co. plantation was called "Newmarket" and
was owned by the BAYLORs in 1967, lying on the Mattapony River near Bowling
Green above Route 301. (NOTE: In another place in the same source, it states
that the "Newmarket" tract decended to him from his father.) (6c) Occupied a
tract patented by him called "Newmarket." In 1727 Caroline Co. was formed,
"Newmarket" lying within the bounds of the new county.
(4) He developed at "Newmarket" the finest horse farm in VA. He imported the

best bred horses available which became the aristocrats of VA Turf and Racing.
It is said that in his early days he took some stock in racing, but later he
turned his entire attention to breeding fine horses for the planters of VA. It
was as profitable a business under his management as the tobacco trade had been
under his father, and he added to the large fortune he had inherited. The
horses which he imported and raised at Newmarket became famous, including
"Sober John" and "Fearnaught." (5,6) Leading importer and breeder of
thoroughbred horses in VA.
(6) "He is said to have spent his winters in Caroline Co. and his summers in
Orange Co. where he owned a tract of over 30,000 acres.
(6) 1740-1765: (5) 1742-1765: (3) c.1740-1760: (3,5,6) Burgess for Caroline Co.,
VA. (3) At one election, he received every vote in the county except one.
(3) Between 1740-1760: Built the Episcopal Church at Bowling Green with another
gentleman. The family continued to worship there until the death of the Rev.
Mr. WAUGH, after which time the church had no minister and the building was
destroyed.
(3,5,6) 1752: Commissioned Lieutenant of Orange Co. by Robert DINWIDDIE.
(5) Colonel in the French and Indian War.
(3,6c) Was with Washington at Winchester.
(5,6d) 1770, 19 Feb: Col. John BAYLOR wrote his will. (6d) Appointed, together
with several other "friends," Gegory BAYLOR (son of Col. Robert BAYLOR) his
executor and the guardian of his younger children. Calls himself John BAYLOR
of New Market. He disposed of a large estate.
(4,5,6) 1772, 16 May: (4) John BAYLOR's will left his large estate to his wife
for her lifetime, and then to his son John BAYLOR IV. He named sons John,
George, Robert and Walker; daughters Lucy ARMISTEAD, Fanny, Courteney, Betty;
grandson John BAYLOR. Executors: son John BAYLOR, son-in-law John ARMISTEAD,
Gregory BAYLOR, Nathaniel BURWELL, Edmund PENDLETON, Anthony THORNTON,
Erasmus TAYLOR, James MADISON, James TAYLOR and John SEMPLE. (5,6) Will proved.
(4) At the time of his death his estate had nearly 100 blooded horses.
(2a) 1772, 23 Jul: John ARMISTEAD and Nathaniel BURWELL, executors of the
estate of Col. John BAYLOR, Esq., advertised that they had empowered Edmund
PENDLETON Jr. to settle his estate.
(2a) 1772, 24 Sep: His executors advertised that they would sell 50 choice
blooded horses of his at Caroline Court House.

be represented to his Excellency the Governor that the court finds by some
mistake, three senior members have been left out of the Commission of the

TAYLOR, George TERRELL, John PAGE, Charles TODD, among others.

pulmonary disease from his injury received during the Revolutionary War.

(4) Early in the Revolutionary War he became one of the military aides of the
commander-in-chief, an appointment possibly due to Washington's personal
acquaintance with Baylor's father. (1) Of Washington's staff.
(4) Served at the Battle of Trenton. (6,7) An aid to Gen. Washington at the
Battle of Trenton.
(4) Directly after the Battle of Trenton, he was sent by Washington to
Congress, bearing the news of the victory, and carrying a captured Hessian
standard. (6) Presented the colors taken at the Battle of Trenton to the
Congress at Philadelphia.
(4) 1776, 27 Dec: Washington wrote a letter to the president of the Congress
highly recommending Baylor. He received the thanks of Congress. John Hancock,
its president, wrote to Washington recommending that Baylor be promoted to the
rank of Colonel and receive the gift of a horse, and these recommendations
were promptly carried into effect. (2,7) Col. in the Revolutionary War.
(4) When Baylor requested the command of a regiment of cavalry, Washington
consented, and wrote him a letter of advice regarding his selection of
officers.
(5a) 1778, Jun: Was of the 3rd Regiment of Light Dragoons.
(4) 1778, 27-28 Sep: His regiment of light horse, called "Mrs. George
Washington's Guards," was cantoned at Old Tappan or Harrington near the
Hackensack River, about 2.5 miles from the main body of troops. The British
Gen. Grey, guided by Tories, attacked the regiment, who were asleep in barns.
Many were killed by bayonet and many others taken prisoner. Baylor was taken
prisoner after being bayoneted through the lungs. Grey was accused of
inhumanity (he had been so accused on previous occassions).
(4) 1778, 19 Oct: Baylor wrote a letter to Washington in justification of his
actions, asserting that his patrols had been cut off and his communications
thereby severed. It does not appear that he was reprimanded.
(4) 1782: Was in command of light troops in the South, and was referred to in
a communication by Laurens as a trustworthy officer. (6) The regiment of horse
which bore his name came into existence from his "patriotic exertions" and
from the freely given pecuniary aid of his elder brother. (7) Commanded a
Virginia Cavalry Regiment bearing his name at the Battle of Yorktown.
(3a) 1804, 20 Feb: Walker Baylor, at Lexington, KY, advertised land for sale
on Paint and Deer Creeks in OH that was entered by Col. George Baylor.

Bourbon Co., KY.

(6) A soldier in Washington's army. (7,8) A Captain in the Revolutionary Army.
(7) At Germantown or Brandywine, he was disabled by a spent ball which crushed
his instep. This made him a cripple for life. (8) Wounded at Germantown or
Brandywine.

of Lexington, KY land in Green Co., formerly Jefferson Co., KY.
(2a) 1803, 15 Mar: Walker and Jane Baylor of Fayette Co., KY deed to William
Baylor of Scott Co., KY, for 5 pounds, 250 acres in Adams Co., OH on the
waters of the east fork of White Oak Creek, bounded by Philip Buckner's
survey #2051, the same being part of a survey made for Walker Baylor #3616 for
770 acres in Ohio. Wts. Levi Todd, Fayette Co., KY Clerk.
(5b) 1804, 20 Feb: Walker Baylor, at Lexington, KY, advertised land for sale
on Paint and Deer Creeks in OH that was entered by Col. George Baylor.
(5a) 1807, 28 Sep: Walker Baylor of Bourbon Co., KY reported a runaway slave
in the Cincinnati, OH newspaper.
(2b) 1810, 23 Jan: Walker and Jane Baylor of Bourbon Co., KY deed to James Lamb
of same, for $1.50 per acre, 245 acres in Ohio on White Oak Creek, part of
Walker Baylor's 770 acres, bounded by Philip Buckner, Thomas Waring. Wts.
John Denbin, John K. Sappington, Sis Seydton.
(4) 1000 acres on Big Three Mile Creek, Union Twp., Brown Co., OH was surveyed
and patented to Capt. Walker Baylor on Warrant 628.
