Hi Clare
I did try to email you a few days ago but I was having some trouble so forgive me if this is duplicatied.
It would seem that we share the same Great- Grandmother Alice Telfer (nee Moore nee O'Brien).
My Grandfather was Horace Telfer youngest child and only son of Alice and Thomas William Telfer. Her eldest (living)child was Catherine Alice (Kitty) who married Walter Bayes. The other siblings were Ethel, Florence, Constance & Alice. My father sister and I have been researching our family history for some years. We have searched in vain for 10 years for the marriage of Alice and Thomas - and have now come to the conclusion that they never married but lived as man and wife.
What we did find out was that Alice was married before to William Thomas Moore (she gives her name as formerly Moore on some of the birth certs). We thought at first that this was her maiden name and searched in vain for her birth. Alice(then O'Brien) and William Moore were married in Chelsea and she gave birth to a girl Catherine Alice 3
weeks later in Chelsea workhouse. Last year we were contacted by John the eldest son of Florence who was also researching the family. We exchanged trees and noted that his birth cert for Catherine Alice was exactley two years later than ours - same parents - birth took place at an address in Chelsea not the workhouse. We then discovered that the first Catherine Alice died in her first year.
Alice and William then had a son that died (and I think another daughter - I havent got the details in front of me - this is from memory!!)
We nor John can find any further trace of William Thomas Moore -Johns theory is that they lived very near a barracks and that William joined up and went off to fight.
Somewhere along the line she took up with Thomas William Telfer a master plasterer who lived a couple of streets away from her. She went on to have the rest of her children with him. On Ethels birth cert. they are not married and she calls herself Alice Moore formerly O'Brien, and Ethel is given Telfer as her middle name, on Florences she calls herself Alice Telfer formerly Moore.
As I said we can find no trace of this marriage after exhaustive searches and came to the conclusion that she may not have known the whereabouts of her first husband and was afraid to marry again. Somewhere along the line Catherine Alice took the surname Telfer - we do not know if she ever knew that Thomas Telfer was not her real father - she gives his name as her father on her marriage cert to Walter Bayes. From what memories my Dad has of his Aunties he was never given any indication that they were other than Alice and Thomas's children.
His memories are that they were all very attractive elegant ladies (yet Alice was very tiny - as was Alice the daughter )Grandad said his Dad was a very tall and handsome man. We have never managed to find a birth cert. for Constance - allthogh we know she existed as my father remembers her well and we have some photographs. Maybe there was a third "husband"
Catherine (Kitty), Ethel , Florence and Connie were all artists models at one time or another. Ethel for the first Ladybird books. John has a lovely portrait of his Mum Florrie, as has Ethels Granddaughter Terrie-Anne.
If you would like I will send you any of the birth/marriage/death certs. that I have that relate to your part of the "tree". I have copies of Alice's birth cert. from John and details of her parents marriage. If I remember right she had one brother and a sister. Her paternal grandparents and I think her father came from Southern Ireland.
Let me know if you would like any of the details - you can also contact me at helenb42@hotmail.com
Wishing you good luck in your research
Regards
Helen
