Hi, I'm Clare Ash, born Clare Bayes in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England in 1950. My father was Alfred James Montreuil Bayes, known as Jim. He was a journalist. Born 1907, d. 1983. His brother was Alexander George Thomson Bayes. There were about 4 years between their births in London. He was an architect and college lecturer in interior design. Their father was Walter John Bayes R.W.S., the eminent artist. Besides painting, Walter designed theatrical scenery, illustrated books, lectured at the Slade School of Art and the Royal Academy of Art, was Headmaster of Westminster (or Winchester) School of Art. Born London 1832, d. 1909. Married his model Kitty Telfer of Todmorden, Yorks, 1904. His siblings were also accomplished artists. Emmeline, the eldest b. circa 1868, m. Jack Aumonier (son of James, the artist) 1912 when she was 45 and he 40. Gilbert, renowned sculptor, b. 1872,d.1952. Married Getrude Smith 1906. Son Geoffrey, daughter Jean. Jessica b.ca.1877, d. ca. 1970, book illustrator and miniaturist artist. Emmeline, Walter, Gilbert and Jessie were the four surviving children of Alfred Walter Bayes and Emily Ann Fielden. Emily,b. 1837, Todmorden had 8 pregnancies. Alfred Bayes R.E., b. 1832, Lumbutts, in the Pennines was an artist and etcher. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, as did his children Walter and Jessie. Alfred's father was a cordwainer, or shoemaker who provided Alfred with the means to leave Yorkshire for London to set up as an artist.
Has anyone any information about Alfred's parents? They would most probably have lived in Yorkshire around Todmorden (which seems to shift between Yorks and Lancashire). Any info welcome. I'm in touch with Jack Bayes, having only recently started looking for my ancestors. See his webpage johnfred@tesco.net
Cheers, Clare Ash (nee) Bayes
