Maria Anna BAYER (or BAIER), Baden-Baden
Paul MAYER (or MEIER) and Maria Anna BAYER (or BAIER), of Baden-Baden, BAD, DEU, were the parents of siblings Maximilian "Max" MAIER and Josephine Apalonia (MAIER) SOHM. The family legend is that Max and Josephine MAIER immig. to the US from DEU with a bro and their father (a bandleader) after their mother died. Max MAIER filed an intent to naturalize in Hamilton Co., OH, in Oct 1851, which indicated he arrived in the port of NY from Le Havre in Sep 1849.
Max and Josephine MAIER both settled in Memphis, TN, where they are bur in the Elmwood Cem. The gravestone for Max MAIER (my 2gr-grf) indicates he was b 28 Jul 1829, BAD, DEU, and that he d 1 May 1867, Memphis. He is almost certainly the same person as the Maximilian MEIER who was chr 30 Jul 1829, Stiftskirche Katholisch, Baden-Baden, Baden, and whose parents were Paul MEIER and Maria Anna BAIER (IGI Record, Batch #C950212, 1810-1832).
The gravestone for Max MAIER's sister, Josephine Apalonia (MAIER) "Do Do" SOHM, indicates she was b 11 Mar 1826, BAD, DEU, and d 19 Mar 1904, Memphis. She is almost certainly the same person as the Josephina MAYER who was chr 12 Mar 1826, Stiftskirche Katholisch, Baden-Baden, Baden, and whose parents were Paul MAYER and Maria BAYER (IGI Record, Batch #C950212, 1810-1832).
All the American records we have found for this family use the spelling MAIER.But the two IGI records cited above indicate that the spellings used in the hinterland by the paternal side of this family and their German ancestors and relatives are MAYER or MEIER.
If the family legend is true, then Maria Anna (BAYER/BAIER) MAYER/MEIER is bur in or near Baden-Baden.
Any assistance or suggestions in finding more info. about this BAYER family or its relatives would be welcome.
