Grace Thelma Scotting Baumgard obituary submitted
Grace Thelma Baumgard was born to Thomas and Etta (Beers) Scotting on January 22, 1924, on her grandmother's farm near Lake Wilson, Minnesota. She was raised on a farm near Worthington, Minnesota where she was baptized at the Presbyterian Church on July 17, 1924. When she was six years old, her mother died and her father married his wife's sister, Margaret and they lived on a farm near Reading, Minnesota where she attended country school. When she was 12 years old, she moved with her parents to a farm north of Lake Wilson. While living there, she attended school and helped on the family farm. On June 28, 1942, she was confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Chandler, Minnesota. Upon completion of her education, she moved to Worthington where she was employed as a nurse's aid at Killbride's Hospital. On July 24, 1945, she was united in marriage to Herbert Albert Baumgard at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Worthington. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm near Worthington where Grace continued to work as a nurse's aid at the hospital and then at Lake Haven Nursing Home. She later became employed at Ehler's Steak House in Worthington. In 1970, they purchased a farm in Aetna Township of Pipestone County, near Ruthton, Minnesota. They continued to farm there until their retirement in 1989 when they moved into Ruthton. After moving to Ruthton, Grace was employed at Alene's Restaurant & Bowling Alley in Ruthton for a couple of years. On February 6, 2008, she became a resident at Sunrise Manor in Tyler, Minnesota. She died there on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the age of 84. Grace was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Ruthton where she was active in the church circle. While living on the farm, she enjoyed raising chickens, ducks, sheep and geese, as well as maintaining her vegetable and flower gardens. She belonged to a clown club and enjoyed playing cards and quilting and crocheting afghans. Throughout her years, she loved dancing, especially doing the polka.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband Herbert Baumgard, Ruthton, Minnesota; four sons: Ronald L. and his wife Marcia Baumgard, Fulda, Minnesota; Dale H. Baumgard, Cottonwood, Minnesota; LeRoy D. and his wife Janice Baumgard, Fulda, Minnesota; and Terry L. and his wife Marlene Baumgard, Ruthton, Minnesota; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; step-mother Margaret Scotting, Ivanhoe, Minnesota; one sister Ethel Mrs. Joe Ten Hove, Pipestone, Minnesota; four half-sisters: Bessie, Mrs. Vaughn Lingen, Tyler, Minnesota; Francis, Mrs. Richard DeRuyter, Ruthton, Minnesota; Ruth, Mrs. Ray Johnson, Ivanhoe, Minnesota; and Cindy, Mrs. Pat Engbarth, Ruthton, Minnesota; and two half-brothers: Sidney and his wife Kathy Scotting, Watertown, SD; and Lloyd and his wife Mary Scotting, Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson; one daughter-in-law Beverly Baumgard; and one half-sister Pearl Hibma.
Funeral service will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Ruthton. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, Worthington, MN. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hartquist Funeral Home, Pipestone Chapel.
