Simon Frederick Baum-Germany, Conn 1854

I am searching for any background and/or ancestrial information on my great-grandfather, Simon Frederick Baum, b. 1854, died in Alliance, Ohio June 30, 1916. My great-grandmother, Lillie Mae Hively, was his second wife. Their oldest son was born in NYC 4-19-1897. Simon went by his middle name "Fred", and I was told he was married before and had twin girls. I have no info whatsoever on them (no names, dates, or locations). I was told he came from Germany, where the family name may have been DeBaum. He supposedly came with 9 or 13 siblings, but I also found in the 1910 US Census records that he is listed as being born in Connecticut (???). He had a sister, Serina, that married a mayor in New York-her last name might be Lein or Elein. She was very wealthy, and they owned a shoe factory and possibly a grand hotel. She is the only sibling to Simon Frederick that my relatives remember anything about. I cannot seem to find any trace of Simon Frederick Baum anywhere. My family swears he came over from Germany, but then the census records have him born in the US. I was also told he lived in New Hampshire and NYC, then when my grandfather was born, he moved the family to Hanoverton, Ohio and eventually Alliance, where he died. His children from his second marriage were Royle Herman, Clyde John and little Fred. I'm hoping someone out there might be able to shed some light on this part of my family, even if it seems like a weak link. Any help would be appreciated! Many Thanks!
