Of course Jacob is a very common name, but I do have a Jacob Baum born about that time.
There must be fifty million of them but here's mine and two generation before it.

This is copy of a letter I sent to another section of the Baum family who are directly related to L. Frank Baum of Wizard fame. His grandfather is my Gr-Gr-Gr Grandfather, though I fell down the other side of the family tree.

Anyway here is the letter, which I include in its entirety since its all typed out and I can just paste it on here:
=============================================

I should introduce myself. I'm Scott Hart of 36356 Grandwood Drive, Gurnee, IL 60031. And my Grandmother was Marion Estella BAUM. She is directly descended from the same Baum's as yourself.
When I read your information from the genealogy I was surprised to find only the two generation which you list - as first and second generation. One of your distant cousins has traced the three generations before Benjamin Baum. The information was supplied by Dottie Baum who comes from my side of the tree - so to speak - through my mother: Patricia Hart, 131 Haigh Ave, Schenectady, N.Y. 12304.

Here is the information which I have through those sources:

Charles D. Baum, on my side of the tree, and Lyman Baum were first cousins.

The information I have about the generations before Benjamin Ward Baum is as follows from a letter from Dottie to my mother Pat Hart:

March 22, 1988
Dear Pat,
I thought I would let you know how my family research is progressing. When I get all the facts together, I will make a report and give you a copy.
I researched census records, church records, the Herkimer County Historical Society and the Fonda Historical Society. I have documents from L. Frank Baum's son. I have papers from Richard Baum of Mohawk (Richard Baum and you and I have the same great-great-grandparents). I've talked to Ruamy Sprakers (Uncle Bill's daughter). I have joined a local genealogy club and have met some people who are related to the Baums through 1700's marriages. I have also learned so very much about local history in the 17 & 1800's.
I will give you a brief outline:

The Baum family is fairly old and prominent in Germany, as borne out by records and references in Germany, dating as far back as the 11th century. Many Baums are descendants of Baum, the Surgeon of Hesse (part of the Palatinate) through his 3 sons who settled in New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
The German Baums were among the thousands of Palatinate** people who fled to England and later Holland to escape religious persecution. Our line definitely had a Dutch background. (** In the 1600's Germany had not yet been formed as a large country; Palatinate was a country on the lower Rhine. Very rich farmland. They had a prince who ruled the country - but the people elected him! They were intelligent and well informed people and also Protestant. The rest of the countries were Catholic - thus religious persecution.)
We are descendants of Phillipus Baum who sailed from Rotterdam, Holland in 1748 to Philadelphia aboard the ship "Hampshire". Capt. Thomas Cheesman - master. Phillipus also had 4 brothers who came here - one was Frederick.
The Palatine Germans started migrating here [the Mohawk valley area] in 1709.
Phillipus Baum had three sons: Frederick, PHILIP, John Henry. We are descendants of Philip.
Philip had 9 children: Henry P. (our g-g-grandfather), Rev. John P.(L. Frank Baum's Grandfather), Daniel, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Philip.

Henry P. married Catherine Hause. They had about 7(?) children: Peter (who married his 1st cousin Elmira Brown), Lucinda(who married her 1st cousin Chauncy Baum), William, Chester, daniel, Caty, & a seventh (?).

Jacob P. married Nancy__?__. They had 7 children: Elmira(who married her 1st cousin Peter Baum), Chauncy(who married his 1st cousin Lucinda), Jacob P., Nelson, John, Mary, David.

So brother and sister married a brother and sister. They were cousins. I don't know if Henry and Jacob were brothers or cousins. I can't find that YET. In those days this was common practice because there were not too many people to pick and choose from.

[[this middle part of the letter is about Chauncy/Lucinda on my side of the family tree]]

It seems our ancestors settled in the Minden area and did not come here [ to the Mohawk valley] until the early 1800's. The Palatine Germans were also known as the Pennsylvania Dutch [more accurately - Deutch]
Closing and END of letter.

It was very interesting running into your genealogy information, since on the genealogy chart I have, the spot above L. Frank Baum was a box with a question mark, and can now be filled with your information.
I will copy this e-mail to my parents through my brother.I believe they now have that copy of the completed history by Dottie and would probably be willing to share information with you if you do not already have it.

Sincerely,
Scott Hart
============================================

I know that a letter within a letter is confusing, but it does include all of the information that I have.

Again, I'm not sure if MY Jacob Baum is YOUR Jacob Baum, but who knows

Scott Hart
