JOHN T. MARTIN BORN, BROOKLYN NY, 1949, ILLEGITIMATE SON OF JOSEPH BAUM??

So, the story goes like this: this is all the info I have and it's wishy washy...hopefully some of it is true...
Claire Alban Martin (or Alban Claire)born 1923-26, met a Joseph Baum while working in New Jersey sometime between 1946-1948. She was catholic, his family was Jewish. She got pregnant (which was an enormous scandal at the time)and gave birth to my father, John Thomas Martin in Brooklyn, New York, Feb. 1949. Joseph's family told him that if he chose to father the baby they would disown him but if he chose not to he would then be given part ownership of their family owned butcher shop. I believe they were from Long Island...not sure though. He chose the butcher shop and supposedly made monthly child support payments to my grandmother for 17 years. After Joseph told my grandmother his decision she took the baby and moved in with her sister Florence Masterson (maiden name Martin) in either Hicksville or Long Island, New York. When my father was 5 years old my grandmother moved them both to Oakland, Ca. and various other places until present time. My father died in 2000, he was 51, my grandmother is still alive. I've spent countless hours trying to track down this Joseph Baum or anyone from his family. He never made any contact with my father and my father never tried to contact him either because he was affraid to hurt my grandmother. My grandmother said she heard he died in a plane accident when my dad was 17...I don't believe this and my dad really didn't either. That was when the child support checks stopped coming however so maybe there is some truth there or she was trying to discourage my father from trying to locate Joseph. I'm not looking to have a relationship with anyone from this family, I only want to know who my father's father was but would welcome any kind of relationship if it was desired. My grandmother does not want me looking for him and won't give me anymore information than this. I believe there's a lot more she's not telling me. The few strong truths I have are that Florence Masterson is still alive and living in Fl. and did live in Long Island. Any connections?? I'd be so grateful.
Tara
