I couldn't help but notice a coincidence with your 'Cathole' and a 'Cat Island', which is by Marblehead, Massachusetts. It was supposedly named after a Robert (Catta, Cotta, Cotty) of Salem, Massachusetts who was there about 1635. I believe I have also seen this name spelled Cattal and Cattell. There is a John Cattell from South Carolina b. 1676 to a John Cattell and Elizabeth Fuller. This could be a long-shot, but you never know.
Sometimes a local accent can really affect the spelling of a surname. I came across your site while looking for an Edward Baugh b. abt. 1580 to Rowland Baugh. Edward married Constance Folliott in 1610. Edward's brother Stephen was supposed to have died on a voyage with Sir Francis Drake. Constance Folliott was the daughter of Thomas Folliott (Mariner) and Katherine Lygon. The Folliotts (Foliots) were allies with Sir Ferdinando Gorges (his mother was Cicely Lygon, Katherine's sister). Gorges and Capt. John Mason were granted land in Maine in the early 1600s. I believe Thomas Folliott was the grandfather of the Rev. Edward Folliott of Virgina who died there circa 1690. I think that this Folliott family or some of their branches settled in the Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire areas (some are right in Marblehead and Salem)in the early 1600s. Their name is now usually spelled Follett. My ancestor was Robert Follett b. abt. 1625. He settled in Salem.
Do you have any of the Folletts in your Baugh line from that time period?
